DWIGHTMESS: Please describe some of your inspirations for the stickers/ minicomics / and riso prints that you create. Are there any artists, art movements, or aesthetics you admire that you'd like to name?
VR: I mentioned Lynda Barry earlier, and I’ll do it again now. Her approach to art making as a way to view and process the world and your surroundings really resonated with me when I first read her books. I think that as I did some of her exercises I began to reflect on my own life and realized how much material there was that I could work with. I’m also really into the “suburban gothic” trope, and I’ve been trying to also work that into my comics and future illustrations and risograph prints.
My riso prints range in subject, it mostly depends on how I’m feeling, haha. That said, I’ve been looking through a book of pre-Columbian Incan art and have found so much illustration and a weird joy in trying to replicate some of those figures and shapes. I just finished a 3 color print of a selection of hummingbirds that were painted onto Incan pottery, and it was a very weird experience to study them and really pay attention to the lines used to draw them. I’m Peruvian myself, so drawing the same figures my ancestors drew thousands of years ago and realizing that they were doing a sort of cartooning themselves was a weirdly emotional moment.
DWIGHTMESS: Thanks so much for sharing your work with us, Veronika!!
